Guided
island tour
Take a scenic drive up to dramatic views from Doukato lighthouse,, 200 feet above the Ionian Sea, then swim in the famed turquoise water of Porto Katsiki and explore mountainous villages. Learn about the culture and history. Stop at a lovely tavern for lunch.
Set on the southernmost point on Cape Lefkada, this lighthouse (circa 1890) offers stunning views toward the islands of Ithaka and Kefalonia.
According to legend, Sappho, the lyric Greek poet from the island of Lesvos, threw hereself from the steep hilltop of Cape Lefkatas, as her doomed love with the sea god Phaon did not end the way she’d hoped.
The place where the lighthouse now stands is believed to have once held a temple for Apollo, a god to whom the Greeks were attributing solar qualities as well as dance, music, truth, prophecy, poetry, etc. Sources from antiquity also mention an ancient practice of human sacrifice at the site, possibly predating the temple itself, stating that humans — later replaced by animals — were thrown off the cape to appease the gods.
