METAMORPHOSIS

IN Michoacán, MEXICO

MOVEMENT - Monarchs - Mantras

MARCH 7-14, 2026

This is your invitation to enter the chrysalis.

Release and revitalize with Amanda Trevelino and Radha Rose March 7-14, 2026 during a conscious travel experience observing the miracle of the Monarch migration in Michoacán, Mexico. The mountains of Michoacán are the primary site for witnessing Monarch butterflies; millions stop during their migration to rest here and to create their next generation, protected by a 13,000-hectare UNESCO biosphere reserve.

This place of pause is part of the butterflies’ annual, and incredible, eight month journey that takes them across North America to Canada and back. During that time four generations are born and die, and how they find their way back to their overwintering site remains a mystery.

Can you envision yourself here, observing the majesty of the monarchs, discovering new ways to spread your own wings, ways to let your soul soar? At METAMORPHOSIS, we’re called to gather and evolve within the collective, and like the butterflies, you too will be witnessed and supported as you follow your inner guidance to create the changes you seek inwardly, and in your own ecosystem.

Our Lodge

Settle in to a 28 hectare forest gorge nestled in the remote countryside of central Mexico. Here, you’ll find mineral springs and soaking pools, endemic tropical birds, herbal garden, hiking trails to a waterfall, and a cave along the rio at Aqua Blanca. This friendly, simple sanctuary is your home for eco-tourism and conscious travel that strives to achieve harmony with nature.

Our Pilgrimmage

  • Features guided yoga, Kirtan, mantra meditation or ceremony twice daily. Anticipate Bhakti (bliss) through mantra music, the ancient discipline of japa mala (repeating mantra as meditation), asana and guided yoga Nidra.

  • Full day excursion to El Rosario Sanctuary, the largest of the monarch sanctuaries in the region, where you’ll witness masses of monarchs. You’ll have the choice to hike and/or ride a horse led by your own caballero, allowing you to ascend the trail through the forest to the living heart of the monarch’s migration site.

  • Three fresh meals prepared daily with local, organic ingredients, served in a family environment.

  • Access to massage services cocooned in the forest setting.

  • Optional activities — second monarch viewing at Chincua Sanctuary, traditional dream weaver crafting, or authentic temazcal “house of heat” ceremonial experiences.

  • Group ground transport to/from the Retreat Center.

  • Unstructured personal time to rest, reflect, renew, explore or just BE.

Amanda Trevelino | Co-Host

Amanda is a student of the Kripalu yoga lineage, ERYT-500, and a yoga therapist since 2016, C-IAYT. She practices yoga on and off the mat with a sense of curiosity and adventure, and feels most closely connected to Oneness through nature. With a personal interest in classical astrology, Amanda has learned there are times that support our transitions and growth, and she trusts the cyclical nature of all things. This migration is an experience in leaning in to our place in that interconnected, Universal order.

Radha Rose | Co-Host

Radha Rose is a retreat leader, mantra musician and community builder based in Athens and Atlanta, GA. Radha has hosted Sisters of Song Circles and Ceremonies, Kirtans and Retreats since July 2019, building conscious community in the Southeast USA. Radha's mission is to create intentional community containers that empower personal transformation, vocal expression and collective spiritual healing.

Josh Klein | music | photography

Josh Klein is Radha Rose's husband and a trained classical and jazz trumpet player. His musical background, combined with his shared spiritual path with Radha, led him to kirtan where he provides the rhythmic heartbeat on mridanga. Driven by a passion for the transformative power of music, Josh seeks to imbue each note with conscious intention, elevating both personal and collective awareness.

Mexico's sanctuaries are the only place in the world where you can actually hear butterflies' wings beating. Their beauty is so ethereal that many Mexicans still hold the Aztec belief that the souls of the dead are reborn as monarchs. At a glance, it looks as though the trees are covered with autumn leaves. then you realize that you are looking at millions of butterflies, covering the fir trees in a delicate, Living blanket of black and orange.

 FAQs

  • Guests are responsible for air travel to and from Mexico City.

A week of twice daily kirtan/yoga/mantra meditation is included along with organic meals and a Monarch excursion. Other excursions are optional at a cost. Additionally guests can choose to book their own private experiences such as a massage directly with the property.

  • Travel insurance is required, particularly given that all sales are final once deposit has been submitted. We suggest AllianzTravel but there are a number of insurance companies. Costs will likely range from $125-$250.

  • Because Santosha is required to book the resort property in advance, there is no cancellation option. All payments are final; however payments are transferrable to a friend or family member. Also. we do require travel insurance to protect your investment in the retreat should an unforeseen conflict arise.

  • Aqua Blanca Hotel is located in the mountains of Michochan, Mexico. Flights can be booked through your preferred carrier to Mexico City where a shuttle service is coordinated by the retreat host to the property. Drive time is approximately 3.5 hours from the airport.

Upon confirmation and receipt of deposit, the host property and/or retreat host will make recommendations to guests upon request.

  • If you are coming from the US, you only need a valid passport. A Visa is not required, nor are special vaccinations.

  • PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Moderate / Difficult

Visiting the butterfly sanctuaries requires walking through the forest for approximately 3 to 4 miles round-trip, at altitudes that could reach up to 11,000 feet. Because the location of the butterflies within the sanctuaries changes throughout the season and from year to year, exact hiking distances on each departure can vary. At times, the terrain can be rough and rocky, and we will have to traverse uneven ground and step over or around sticks and branches. Uneven, steep inclines may require us to maintain balance as we watch the butterflies. The effects of altitude should not be underestimated. The physical exertion involved can be considered strenuous for people who are less active and not accustomed to hiking at altitude.

The entrance to El Rosario butterfly sanctuary can only be accessed via a 30-minute, open-bed truck ride over cobblestone roads, which can make for a somewhat bumpy ride and may be considered uncomfortable for travelers with back or neck issues. Once inside the sanctuaries, horses are available to ride uphill to reach the butterfly colonies, but not down. When riding the horses, we will be led by a local guide through trails that can, at times, be narrow and rugged, so riders must be alert and maintain balance. Travelers should expect to spend 30-45 minutes on horseback at a time. Due to the diminutive stature of the local horses, the maximum rider weight each horse can carry is 260 pounds.

It is important to note that even with the option to ride horses, there will still be some hiking involved while going up to the colonies, as the horses cannot travel the entire length of the trail. After dismounting, travelers will be required to walk a final 1/4 to 2 miles up a steep slope to reach the butterfly colonies. Depending on where the butterflies are located, this final slope can be less steep at times. Anyone who opts not to ride horses will have an approximately 3-mile uphill hike with roughly 1,000 ft. elevation gain. All travelers must hike downhill back to the sanctuary entrance, descending at least 600 steps over approximately 3 miles, with an elevation change of about 1,000 feet
